　　Amelia Bedelia 到羅傑斯家幫傭，主人夫婦外出前留給她一張待辦家事清單。Amelia 對文字都只是執著表面的意思，主人要她Dust the furniture. (把家具擦拭乾淨)，她以為是要撒一層粉，就把浴室裡的一瓶 dusting powder 拿來灑在沙發家具上，還覺得滿香的 ! 清單上有一項Measure tow cups of rice. (量兩杯米)，她把米裝進二個杯子，拿尺量了長度，就又把米倒回去。

　　本書是作者所寫《Amelia Bedelia》系列的第一本成名作。女主角所鬧的笑話，都是因為太拘泥字面的意思，Draw the drapes when the sun comes in. (把窗簾拉上.....)，她誤以為是要她畫窗簾。Dress the chicken. (把雞肉處理乾淨)，她以為要幫生雞著裝，這樣的故事可以讓讀者意識到語言文字是多義的 (polysemous)，許多英文理解、翻譯上的問題可能都是刻舟求劍，不知變通產生的。

　　本書介紹到許多實用的居家生活用語，如change the towels、draw the drapes、put the lights out、measure two cups of rice、trim the fat、dress the chicken等。請注意 dust the furniture的dust，英文意思是「擦拭乾淨」不是「撢灰塵」
